Brenda Strong grew up in the Portland, OR area, attending Parkrose High in Portland and graduating from Sandy Union High in Sandy, OR. She attended Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theater. While at ASU, she won the title of Miss Arizona 1980, and competed in that year’s Miss America pagaent.
After graduation, she got her first break with a brief but memorable appearence in Billy Crystal’s “You Look Marvelous” music video, as well as a People magazine shoot with Crystal (you can see the photo on the Links page). This led to guest shots on such shows as St. Elsewhere, Macgyver, and Cheers, as well as her first film appearences in Weekend Warriors and Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs.
More recently, she had a high profile recurring role on Seinfeld as Sue Ellen Mishkie (or as Elaine refers to her, “The Braless Wonder”). About Sue Ellen, Brenda told the Los Angeles Times that “She was never designed around sex or about being sexy. She was about freedom and living life to the fullest. I guess that’s what Jerry found so appealing when she was walking down the street with only a bra and a blazer. Here is a woman who had no qualms about being completely open about who she is.”
Brenda also told the Times that “Seinfeld has been a great launching board in a lot of ways”, and indeed it has. Recent film appearences have included Starship Troopers, Black Dog, The Deep End of the Ocean and Red Dragon.
In the Fall of 2004, Brenda can be heard (as narrator) and seen (in periodic apperances) on ABC’s new series Desperate Housewives, alongside Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, and Marcia Cross, among others.
In addition to her acting career, Brenda is also a certified Yoga instructor who has taught at UCLA’s MInd/Body Institute, and is working on her first book about Yoga and the woman’s journey.She has two yoga videos available, Yoga for Fertility and Yoga for Partners. She currently lives in the Los Angeles area with her husband, Tom Henri (himself a Yoga instructor who has conducted couples workshops with Brenda) and their son John.
